Even his enemies considered Napoleon Bonapart a remarkable man. Yes, he was a military genius. That incredible talent, linked to his boundless ambition, eventually led to his downfall. However, that was only part of Napoleon’s wide ranging interests and activities. He left an indelible mark on French society through his legal and other reforms. His contemporaries were especially impressed by his apparently boundless energy. He adopted the honeybee as his motif, and he apparently tried to live up to that image. Napoleon slept little and had an incredibly active schedule, demonstrating an interest in every area of social endeavor. He also had a brilliant mind and demonstrated some degree of expertise in many fields of law and government.
Donald Trump appears to have many of Napoleon’s characteristics and abilities, but we can thank God that he seems to have no interest in becoming a military conqueror. Trump craves adulation, but I think he would prefer to be honored as a peacemaker rather than an empire builder. Like Napoleon, he sleeps little and appears to have amazing energy. Though perhaps not as brilliant as the French emperor, he turns his energy toward every area of governance and demonstrates a high level of competence in many fields. Unfortunately, his personal foibles (pride and pettiness) alienate many people and lessen his effectiveness. Nevertheless, I believe the American people are very fortunate to have him as their leader at this critical moment in history.
