Recently a Cleveland, Ohio, radio station fired an employee for referring to Kamala Harris as the nation’s “first colored vice-presidential candidate.”-
To me his dismissal appears to be an example of political correctness on steroids.
When I was very young, I was taught that the polite term used to refer to a Black’s ethnicity was “negro.” Somewhat later, the term “colored” gained more favor. Later still, “Afro-American” became the standard, but that soon morphed to “African American.” More recently, “Black” became the term in common usage.
I was not aware that using one of the earlier terms was considered derogatory, and I seriously doubt that the radio operator at WTAM meant any offense.
These are strange times. This is not the America I know and love.
