TRUMPISMS

Trump’s March 19th press conference with the Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was priceless.  A Japanese reporter questioned Trump as to why European nations and Japan weren’t forewarned about our plans to attack Iran.  Trump smiled and responded with the observation that no one knows better about surprise than Japan, an obvious reference to the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.  Prime Minister Takaichi said nothing,  but it appeared to me that she was struggling to restrain her laughter.

The following morning I had a brief exchange with two fellow VFW post members about Trump.  One of them said that he could never support a President who leads into a war.  The other gentleman expressed his displeasure over Trump going to war without Congressional approval.  He also referenced Trump’s alleged failure to visit American war memorials in France because of a threat of rain.

As a Trump supporter, these comments made me sad.  As I wrote in my March 19 post, I believe the attack on Iran was fully justified.  As for Congressional approval, Presidents have initiated military actions under the war powers act ever since World War II, which, by the way, was the last time we actually declared war.

The scurrilous accusations about Trump’s disparagement and disrespect for American veterans disturbed me most.  Yes, these accusations have been made, and many good Americans believe them, but I’m convinced that they are nothing more than a tissue of lies.  Let the Trump haters produce their accusers, and Trump supporters can come forth with hundreds of witnesses with conflicting testimony.

Why doesn’t Trump sue the liars?  Sometimes he does, but our laws make it very difficult for a public figure to convict someone of libel.  Thus, the unsubstantiated attacks and lies continue.  For example, consider the many false statements made about Trump and the Charlottesville riots of 2017.

Trump has many faults.  Let’s not convict him undeservedly.
