Statistics

During the November 21 Men’s Forum discussion some in the group said that statistics seem to support the idea that migrants commit crimes at a lower rate than native-born Americans.  I did not respond at that time, but I was reminded of a statement attributed to Mark Twain, “There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics.”

The criminal records of millions of migrants remain unknown due to illegal crossings and lax data collection by federal and “sanctuary” jurisdictions, but an analysis of available statistics suggests that the crime rate of noncitizens is vastly understated.  ICE routinely releases many illegals into the country on their own recognizance and then discovers afterward that many had criminal records in their home countries. ICE reported last summer that it had released 7.4 million non-detained migrants into the United States (time period undefined) and that these include 435,719 individuals with criminal convictions in their home countries and another 226,847 with pending criminal charges. Those figures do not say whether the crimes of the latter group were committed in the accused’s home country or the U.S.

Criminal histories of migrants from far-flung countries with often shoddy record-keeping are somewhat hard to determine, and it’s impractical to hold each person until they have passed a rigorous background check. Therefore, the actual figures may be even more troubling.  The ICE report stated that 13,099  non-detained individuals had convictions for homicide, and another 1,845 face unresolved criminal homicide charges.  9,461 have convictions for sex offenses (most often rape).  These rates are much higher than those among our native-born citizens.

In recent years the number of murders in the United States has been about 20,000 per annum.  We don’t need any foreign assistance in this area.

In writing this article, I drew heavily from a recent article by John R. Lott, Jr. that appeared in RealClearWire.

  1. Now the undocumented immigrants are here it will be very hard to remove them and will undoubtedly become a burden to the Americans already residing here. Tax burdens will likely shoot through the roof when many will likely to either jail or prison time not to mention the strain on schools, affordable housing, welfare agencies and the like. To let them in without so much as vetting them was stupid to begin with; it will end up driving down wages, lead to higher unemployment, and create an under class that serves the rich but doesn’t allow for integration into the middle class. The very least that should of been done for these migrants would be to teach them about our Constitution and the English language and then provide them with a green card so that they can work here and not be exploited.

The U.S. needs to send a mercenary armed force into Mexico to destroy the cartel and their ability to send fentanyl, meth, opioids, etc. into America. This cooperation by the Mexican government could be directly tied to the tariffs Trump will be proposing.
