Hyperbole and Lies

I have listened to several Trump speeches during the past year. I usually don’t listen long, because he tends to express the same thoughts over and over again. His campaign events are essentially pep-rallies.

The Democrats accuse Trump of being a serial liar. I disagree. Trump is a serial exaggerator. Rarely if ever do I hear him utter an outright lie, but he’s certainly guilty of hyperbole. The number of illegals crossing the border swells in his descriptions. His crowd sizes grow. His 2020 economy was the best in the history of the republic. His tax cuts were the greatest.

Who can measure these things? He might actually believe them. Trump sounds like a circus promoter advertising “The Greatest Show on Earth.” But I would not label his statements as lies.

On the other hand, Democrat Party campaigners are often guilty of outright lies. This is especially true when they address the subject of abortion. That issue was a winner for them in 2022, and they trot it out again and again in the national campaign and in the contests for the United States House and Senate. The Maryland Senate race between Angela Alsobrooks and Larry Hogan provides an excellent example. Alsobooks harps on abortion in her TV ads. She says that, if elected, former Governor Hogan will join with other Republicans and enact a national abortion ban. This is absolute nonsense, and I’m certain Alsobrooks knows it’s untrue. Hogan has never favored an abortion ban, and most Repulican senators and representatives, along with Donald Trump, want to leave the matter with the states. There is not the slightest threat of a national abortion ban.

Perhaps Harris, Alsobrooks, and other Democxrat candidates beat the abortion drum because they have little else to run on. Certainly the Biden-Harris record is nothing brag about. In fact, they should hang their heads in shame. Contrariwise, both Trump and Hogan had administrations in which they could take some pride.
