Stupid Is As Stupid Does

Recently Pope Francis was quoted as saying that those who deny climate change are stupid.

I don’t deny climate change.  I believe the world is warming.  But the real question is what do we do about it?  I believe the current warming trend is cyclic and inevitable, and there may be little we can do to slow it down. However, many responsible scientists insist that curbing carbon emissions would be a positive step.

The Biden Administration has made reducing carbon emissions a key policy.  The President declared war on the fossil fuel producers, with the coal industry being a particular anathema, and vast sums of money are being spent to promote electrical vehicles (EVs) as an alternative to gasoline powered vehicles.  Unfortunately, they are pushing EV production at an unrealistically rapid pace, and the market is resisting.

The production of EVs produces its own set of environmental problems.  Also, though I am no scientist, I’m convinced that if the United States  banned all gasoline powered today the effect on Earth’s climate would be minimal, whereas it’s certain that our economy would be devastated.

President Trump is not a stupid man.  He knows that it would do Earth’s climate more harm than good if we kill our own fossil fuel industry while China, India, Russia, Venezuela and other countries dig more coal mines, drill more oil wells, and carelessly continue to pollute.  We are much more responsible in the way we attempt to reduce the deleterious effects of carbon emitters.  Nevertheless, our present government appears determined to curb our own fossil fuel production and consumption and shift it overseas. It appears that Biden and his advisors are the stupid ones.

Pope Francis speaks principally to Washington and the capitals of Europe.  His words would be more effective if they resonated in places like Beijing, New Delhi, Moscow and Caracas.
