Self-Evident (Redux)

Our Declaration of Independence begins with the words “We hold these truths to be self-evident.”

What were our founding fathers saying?  They were asserting that certain  fundamental rights are God-given, not subject to the laws of parliament or the whims of magistrates and kings.  These wise men also realized man’s fallibility.  They therefore devised a system of government in which the powers of the chief executive and the legislature were balanced to keep each other in check, with the judiciary set to act as arbiter.

Do we still believe that certain truths are self-evident?  Do we still believe in God?

Men like George Washington and John Adams were convinced that the success of the American republic was based on the bedrock of our Judeo-Christian ethos.  Today that American ethos, our fundamental beliefs and guiding principles, are under assault from the left.

Paraphrasing and modifying a passage in the Apostle Paul’ s letter to the Ephesians, “our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the powers of darkness and the spiritual forces of wickedness.”

We must fight the nihilists!

God help us in this struggle.

P.S.  I realize that some people will believe that I slipped over the edge and have become a raging Christian fundamentalist.  However, I think it’s important to realize that our current cultural and political battles have deep spiritual overtones.  For those on the left, their twisted beliefs have become a virtual religion that justifies an abandonment of the Constitution and a reordering of society based on Marxist egalitarian concepts.
