Several facts seem obvious.
The Ukraine is gradually losing the conflict. Their troops are outnumbered and have suffered enormous casualties. There are also reports of a serious level of desertions in the Ukrainian army. The United States and some European states have contributed support, but not enough to stem the Russian tide. If NATO and the United States were do more it would raise the threat of a general war.
Russia has also experienced heavy losses, but it still has plenteous reserves. Putin does not appear ready to cease and desist unless he attains his territorial objectives.
Zelenski recently indicated that the Ukraine is willing to sacrifice some territory if it receives assurances of protection from future Russian aggression. He wants membership in NATO to guarantee that protection.
Putin is unlikely to agree to any plan that allows the Ukraine into NATO.
Without allowing the Ukraine to join NATO, I believe that Trump, working with NATO leadership, can concoct an agreement that provides the Ukraine territorial guarantees of sufficient weight for it to come to the peace table.
Putin would love to expand Russia to its old Imperial borders, but I see no danger of him moving against the Baltic States, Finland, Poland or any other member of NATO.
