Childhood Fantasies

This morning my thoughts turned to memories of my childhood and some of my weird misperceptions of that time.

As a very young child, I would often visit my next door neighbor, Mrs. Cheek, sit in a kitchen chair, munch biscuits, and watch her big coffee percolator at work.  As jets of coffee appeared in the glass bulb on top of the percolator they had the appearance of a little man jumping up and down.  That’s what I thought I was seeing, and I believe Mrs. Cheek may have encouraged my fantasy.

Someone told me that the sun was much larger than the earth.  When I looked up at the sky I could not see how this could be correct.  My childhood logic told me that, if so, the sun would fill the entire sky.  At that time, I could not conceive the fact that the earth and the sun were giant bodies floating in the immensity of space.

I saw a British crime mystery at the cinema.  I remember the fog, the raincoats, and the lampposts.  For some months afterward, whenever it rained, I would don a raincoat and go stand under a telephone pole looking for criminals.  Fortunately, I didn’t find one.

Even as children, we are always seeking to understand the world and the events that are unfolding around us.

I continue to search for truth.
