When soldiers, ships, or planes are accidentally targeted by their own people it is called friendly fire. Crossfire is when weapons are being fired from different directions and crossing the same general area. Getting caught in crossfire during a shootout can be deadly.
House Speaker Johnson is caught in crossfire, and it definitely isn’t friendly.
It appears that some of Johnson’s fellow Republicans are eager to target him along with Democrats.
Speaker Johnson is an almost impossible position. His slim House majority does not allow him to advance any truly controversial legislation. Even should he succeed, it will be shot down by the Democrat controlled Senate. The only possibility of legislative success is for him to persuade some Republicans along with moderate Democrats to support certain desired measures. But cooperation with Democrats is anathema to Republicans on the extreme right, and therefore they brand Johnson as an “RINO” and seek to unseat him. How shortsighted!
Some are also dumb. Recently a few right-wing Republicans demanded that Johnson insist on additional funds for border security as a condition for approving more money for Ukraine. But more border funding would be absolutely worthless so long as the Biden administration controls the way that money is being spent. Johnson did not comply with their demands.
Another thing that annoys certain extremist Republicans is the fact that Mike Johnson is a genuinely nice person. He makes respectful comments about some of his Democrat opponents.
Republicans, watch your aim! Don’t put a good man in your crosshairs.
