There has always been a surfeit of evil in this world, but when I was a young man there was a societal tendancy to keep the dark side under wraps. I grew up in the 1930s and 40s. The books I read were populated with men and women who were models of probity. There were no magazines such as Playboy. As for motion pictures, the Hays Code was a self-imposed set of guidelines for all films released between 1934 and 1968. The code prohibited profanity, suggestive nudity, graphic or realistic violence, sexual perversions and rape. Hollywood may have been a cesspool even then, but the public was mostly unaware of that and tended to view the stars of stage and screen through a romantic veil.
But the dark side existed. and if you sought for it you could find it. However, if you moved in that direction you knew you were violating God’s commandments and our own society’s unwritten rules.
Today’s young people have no protective guidelines. Much of our literature resembles scriblings on a bathroom wall. Motion pictures are filled with sex and violence. The internet is even worse. Society has no law except a law against judging another person’s conduct. God’s commandments are mocked. Evil has climbed out from beneath the rocks and into the sun.
People of faith, do not despair. God is still with us. Wrap you home, you families, and your nation in prayer. We know how the final chapter will end.
