Robert Bork wrote a book entitled Slouching Towards Gomorrah in the 1990s. I haven’t read it, but the title tells me all that I need to know. For those of you who are Biblically illiterate, Gomorrah and Sodom were ancient cities that were destroyed by God for their great wickedness. Bork evidently believed that America was on the way toward the same fate.
Bork was considered a brilliant legal scholar and judge, and in 1987 President Reagan nominated him to serve on the Supreme Court. He was attacked by women’s rights groups as being an anti-abortionist, and the ACLU and others were concerned about his positions on civil rights legislation. Senator Ted Kennedy led a cabal that successfully blocked Bork’s confirmation to the high court. They did it so viciously and effectively that the words “bork” and “borked” were added to the English lexicon.
Today is November 7, 2023. As I review the results of yesterday’s elections and referendums, I am truly alarmed.
In Virginia the Democrats exploited women’s rights sentiments to win control of both houses of the state legislature. In one district a Democratic candidate for the state senate narrowly lost to her Republican opponent (51.16 to 48.40) despite recent revelations that she is performing as a porn star on the internet.
In Ohio, voters approved changes to the state constitution that legalized marijuana and codified a woman’s right to abortion.
It would appear that we are no longer slouching towards Gomorrah.
We are now racing towards destruction.
