Yesterday, October 25, 2023, Mike Johnson was elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
From all that I can learn of the man, he was a fortuitous choice, and the House may be well served by his leadership. He is reputed to be a devout Christian, a patriot, and a good husband and father. It seems that he has developed good relationships with his House colleagues, even with those with whom he has profound philosophical and political differences. His priorities appear sound, and perhaps he will be able to promote the sort of inter-party cooperation that will enable the House to do its part in restoring good government. I pray that that happens.
Of course, there are extremists on the left who are already attacking him. His religiosity disturbs them. They label him a hard right conservative. His pro-life views regarding abortion offend them, and they call him a truth denier for questioning results of the 2020 Presidential election. I believe these attacks on him are unjustified. As a professing Christian it is only natural that Johnson takes a pro-life stance. However, I think his preferred position is to keep the Federal government out of the issue and leave it to be decided by the states. That is a perfectly reasonable attitude, and it is fully in accord with the latest Supreme Court ruling. As for the 2020 election, there are good men on either side of the issue of whether or not the outcome was rigged. For myself, I am convinced that it was. Rigged or not, however, both Mike Johnson and I agree that Joe Biden is our President. We believe we made an absolute mess of the election, but there is no way to unscramble eggs. The nation is stuck with Biden for a while longer.
Meanwhile, let us attempt to restore good order in the House of Representatives.
Congratulations Mr. Speaker, and may God assist you as you lead the people’s chamber.
